An oft-used criticism of political views that we don’t like is to refer to them as extremist’, but what is often forgotten is that a view cannot in itself be extreme – it can only be extreme in relation to something else; so if my view is extreme to you, then your view is extreme to me.  In labelling a political viewpoint as extreme, we therefore automatically label our own as extreme at the same time.
