Oxford city council today voted unanimously to remove from Aung San Suu Kyi the freedom of the city because of her apparent support for the ethnic cleansing taking place in her government. At the same time, the Oxford University college St Hugh’s where Aung San Suu Kyi studied has decided to remove her portrait from public display. Quite right too, we can’t be seen to publicy display people who tolerate oppression can we? (Of course, we must defend the decision of the Oxford University college Oriel to refuse to take down a statue to Cecil Rhodes – despite protestations that he was an imperialist supporter of slavery – Rhodes was British after all – we must have some standards!)
