Following weeks of unproven pro-union rhetoric from the Spanish Prime Minister concerning the ‘silent majority’ who want to remain part of Spain, we see now from the recent election that in fact, the majority of the Catalan people seemingly support secession from Spain. Surely now, is the time that the Prime Minister will swallow his pride?
The dissolution of the regional government (apparently on the grounds of rebellion) was a smack in the face of democracy. Now however, with a turnout of around 80%, the lie that there is a silent majority wish to remain part of Spain can no longer be sustained – the people of Catalan have once again spoken. There is no majority, silent or otherwise – Mariano Rajoy should be called to account for his unsubstantiated propaganda, just as anyone else would be. Rajoy should free the 8 politicians (currently held in jail awaiting trial for sedition and rebellion) and seek to discuss the independence of Catalonia as he should have done months ago.
