There have been many accusations of game-playing thrown at the MPs involved in deciding/ blocking Brexit; and from the MPs in question, many denials. Yet today we saw the stark reality laid bare… the u-turn from Brexiteers in the European Reasearch Group such as Jacob Rees-Mogg tonight puts the lie to their claims of innocence. Rees-Mogg has gone from voting against Prime Minister Mays’s deal to voting for it… but not because the deal has changed; becuase the Prime Minister has decided to resign if the deal is passed by Parliament.
So the deal itself isn’t being changed, only the PM. Surely the deal is either acceptable or not… this blatant disregard for the well-being of the nation as a whole makes a mockery of the British ‘democratic’ processes. Behaviour like this, on issues which will affect the livelihoods of generations to come is exactly why is is vital that there be a way to stop these bastards from committing such egregious acts of self-interest.
We must be able to hold them to account at all times and not just during elections.
The whole situation around the ‘Meaningful Vote’ is outrageous and should be condemned. I hear very little from the British Press on the matter.
When this present fiasco is over and before the next one begins we must consider putting in place a Written Constitution which would go a long way from preventing the kind of manipulation we are seeing on a daily basis. As an example when the ‘Meaningful Vote’ was defeated by 230 votes the government should have been required to resign.
In addition the first past the post electoral system(FPTP) should be replaced by a fully proportional representation system.
The old cry of FPTP gives you ‘strong and stable’ governments should surely now be discarded, as the evidence shows the contrary and has done since the 2005 election when the Labour Government that was elected with a majority of 79 achieved that majority with 37% of the vote.
